Description of Expectations of our classroom

Description:

Wright Emotional Growth Center staff (EGC) welcomes you to our program. The staff is dedicated to working with you and your child. Communication and team work are an essential part of our program to help with the success of your child. Please contact us with questions about the program or your child’s needs at school. Our direct number to the classroom is 503-399-3026.

The EGC is a self-contained classroom with a lower student to teacher ratio. The staff is dedicated to focus on the emotional, social, and academic issues that a child has established prior to his/her entry into the EGC. A student in the EGC will be given the opportunity to work on conflict resolution, anger management, self-control, decision making, taking responsibility for their choices/actions, dealing with disappointment and frustrations appropriately, and using correct social skills to express themselves without violence. At Wright we hope to provide students the opportunity to learn and grow from their experiences by helping develop appropriate and acceptable actions in a classroom.

Each student will be responsible for a daily point card. Each day, students write their name and date on a point card in the morning. During the day the point card is used to keep track of which activities a student participates in. Students earn points for participating in the expected activity. The point card also will be used to keep track of “thinking” errors. These are poor behavior choices a student may make throughout the day. Each thinking error takes away points of the point card. At the end of the day the points are calculated and each student talks about their day. At this time they earn tickets for our Friday store. Each student is responsible for bringing home their point card and giving it to their parent/guardian. The parent/guardian signs the back and the student returns it to class the next day.

The use of the level system, point cards, and bonuses are used to help student monitor their behavior. This also allows students to visually see how their actions affect what opportunities they can earn. As a student demonstrates safe and appropriate behavior, the student can earn a higher level and eventually earn mainstreaming opportunities. A student earning mainstreaming opportunities will begin with short amounts of time. When the student demonstrates appropriate behavior, more time will be added. Once a student has shown a pattern of behavior that is safe and not disruptive towards other students for an extended amount of time with very little to no help from the EGC, a meeting may be held to discuss the possibility of the student returning to their neighborhood school.

Explanation of the Level Sysytem

Level System

The purpose of the Level system at Wright EGC is to help students monitor their behavior. This system allows students on a daily basis identify how their choices affect their daily routine and allows them to earn opportunities. This level system is an attempt to help each student identify and reach for acceptable behavior in a mainstream classroom.

Level 3 Excellent (Blue)

Student is making good choices consistently. Level 3’s are not perfect. However, the student is handling his/herself in an acceptable manner according to classroom rules. The student is resolving conflict in an appropriate manner. When a student is on level 3 for more than 4 weeks, the student should be given an opportunity to mainstream in a general educational classroom.

Level 2 Good (Green)

Student is making good choices in and out of EGC classroom most of the time. The student is handling mistakes and following teacher directions in an appropriate manner. Students on level 2 are able to do extra duties around the school such as attendance folders, return classroom library books, attend assemblies, field trips, and many others that may come up through the school year.

Level 1 Fair (Yellow)

Student is making safe choices in classroom. Student is practicing acceptable responses when communicating with teachers and students. Students on level 1 are able to acknowledge their mistakes and taking steps to correct them. Level 1s are able to get their own lunch, attend assemblies, and be apart of classroom activities. During recess they are inside doing work. During free, their choices are reading a book quietly or putting their head down. A student on level 1 does not shop in the classroom store on Friday. A student on level 1 may be asked to go to time out.

Level 0 Needs Improvement (Red)

A student on level 0 is not taking responsibility for his/her actions by not following the classroom rules. Level 0 may be sent to time out .Students on Level 0 are expected to sit quietly in a study carol working independently. A student on level 0 will not attend classroom store, assemblies or special events during the school day. However, during the day a student on level 0 can earn a walk with a teacher by working and being safe.

Level 0 Red

  • I will be escorted to all areas of the building depending on my behavior.

  • I need to earn a 90 2 days in a row to earn my level 2. If I do not I will continue to be a level 1.
